Kumon Success Story: Dr. Darryl Yong

Darryl Yong started Kumon Math in sixth-grade and completed the math program in 11th grade. He graduated from Harvey Mudd College, which is a renowned school for math and science. After receiving a grant and earning a PhD, he returned to Harvey Mudd and is a Professor of Mathematics. Darryl sees the impact of his Kumon studies in his approach to teaching math.

“Kumon helped me to see that mathematics can be a vehicle for self-improvement: it can help students become more confident about themselves and to learn to love learning. That is a guiding principle in all of my work with students and teachers. Because of Kumon, I grew to love seeing other people have those “AHA moments” when they learn something interesting or they realize they can do something they couldn’t do before.”

Darryl believes everyone has the ability to become proficient in math and reading through practice.

“What I try to do, and what I think Kumon tries to do, is to show math is a skill just like any other skill like playing basketball or learning to play the piano. If you work at it, you will get better. Every child has the potential to read fluently and learn mathematics. The brain is like a muscle. If you use it a lot, it will get stronger.”

Darryl encourages students to go beyond what they think they are capable of achieving by helping to strengthen their belief in their current abilities and that math can be learned by most students, not just a select few.

“There is a lot of research that tells us that students’ mathematical learning correlates most strongly with their perception of their own ability to learn mathematics and their understanding of what is required to learn mathematics. When students believe they can learn mathematics and believe that a productive struggle with mathematics leads to learning, they will achieve. Kumon can really help students develop both of those things.”
